Anal sex toys, a beginner’s guide

28 September 2026 · 6 min read · The editors

Anal pleasure is not exceptional. What changes everything is pace, lubricant, and a toy that cannot disappear.

Start with the body, not the object

The anus does not lubricate itself. Without plenty of lube, the session becomes uncomfortable before it becomes interesting. A water-based gel suits almost every material. A silicone gel lasts longer, but it damages silicone toys: do not mix the two.

The sphincter tightens if you rush it. Breathe, push very slightly outward as if going to the toilet, and let the toy in instead of forcing it. Pain is a stop signal, not a stage to get through.

A flared base is not a detail

Anything that goes into the anus needs a base wider than the inserted part, or a shape that stays outside: a plug with a flange, beads with a ring, a finger. A smooth, straight object can be sucked in. That is anatomy, not folklore.

For a first try, a small, soft silicone plug with a rounded tip is enough. Size is chosen by the widest diameter, not by length.

Hygiene, both ways

Wash before and after. A light anal rinse can reassure, but a full enema is neither needed nor harmless: too much water irritates. A recent toilet visit and a clean toy do most of the work.

Never switch from one orifice to another without washing the toy, or without a fresh condom over it. The rectum and vagina do not share the same flora. After use, warm water and mild soap, or a toy cleaner, then dry before putting it away.

These texts are general pointers. They do not replace medical advice, or a sexologist, when something worries you or hurts.
