Sex and love

Received ideas: what he and she still believe

25 June 2026 · 6 min read · The editors

The same scenes, two readings. We put down six lines people still say all the time, and what they block.

“Men always want it”

No. Men’s desire varies with sleep, stress, self-worth, context. Treating a no as an anomaly pushes people to fake wanting it. A calm “not tonight” is more erotic, over time, than a duty.

“Women need twenty minutes, men need two”

Averages hide people. Some women come quickly, some men need a long warm-up to really be there. Timing turns sex into a protocol. The useful question is: what do you like, right now.

“A toy replaces the partner”

A vibrator does one thing a hand or a mouth does differently, often more steadily. It does not speak, desire, or replace anyone. Many couples use one together, because it adds a gesture instead of taking one away.

“Anal is a gay-men’s practice”

The prostate and the sphincter have no orientation. Some women like anal penetration, some straight men too, alone or together. Reducing anal pleasure to an identity just stops people trying something that draws them.

“If the erection drops, desire is gone”

Erection is a vascular and nerve reflex, not a feelings detector. Performance anxiety cuts it even when want is strong. Mixing the two hurts both people in the bed.

“Size decides pleasure”

Most vaginal and clitoral pleasure endings are reachable without great length. Angle, rhythm, a hand, attention weigh more than centimetres. Size becomes a topic the day one of you is in pain, not before.

These texts are general pointers. They do not replace medical advice, or a sexologist, when something worries you or hurts.
